Belize, located in Central America, is bordered to the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Although a diverse country with various cultures and languages English remains the official language of the country. Belize also has the lowest population density in Central America with 35 people per square mile.
Belize is also known for its extreme biodiversity and distinctive ecosystems. On the coast, there is a swampy coastal plain with mangrove swamps. In the south and interior there are hills and low mountains. Most of our land is undeveloped and is forested with hardwoods. It is a part of the Mesoamerican biodiversity hotspot and it has many jungles, wildlife reserves, a large variety of different species of flora and fauna and the largest cave system in Central America.
Beleize is also home to the Belize Barrier Reef, a 190 mi long section of the 560 mi long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, making it as of 2019, the largest reef system in the world due to the Great Barrier Reef's cloral beaching that has occured. It is Belize's top tourist destination, popular for scuba diving and snorkeling and attracting almost half of its 260,000 visitors. More importantly it is the perfect location to catch Bone, Permit, and Tarpon.
